Architect selected for Worthing project

Plans put forward by landscape architects craft:pegg for a £500,000 cultural scheme in Worthing, West Sussex, have been selected by the local authority, following a design competition.

Worthing Borough Council (WBC) chose the London-based practice for the Splash Point scheme, which will funded through the government's Sea Change programme that aims to revitalise coastal towns and communities. Subject to approval from the council's cabinet on 14 September, construction work is expected to get underway on the scheme by the end of June 2010 and will take approximately three months to complete.

WBC cabinet member for regeneration, John Rogers, said: "It will provide a lovely, relaxing focal point for visitors and a great meeting place for everyone. The views will be spectacular, both out to sea and along the coast." The judging panel consisted of representatives from the council, the Landscape Institute, Worthing Arts Council, South East England Development Agency, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) and the town's regeneration team.

Ian Turkington, chair of the judging panel, said: "The panel felt that this scheme demonstrated a sensitive response to the site, with a careful balance of ingredients, which would have the potential to create an attractive new destination for the town. "In particular, the panel commended the careful selection of materials which reflect the existing qualities of the foreshore and felt that the rainbow mist fountains, lighting and grove of trees would enrich the experience of the space."
