Arts venue planned for Wakefield building
Wakefield College is to operate a performing arts venue at the city's Grade II-listed museum building under new proposals for the historic property on Wood Street.
The museum service will be suspended from the end of November to enable staff to prepare for the relocation of its collections to Wakefield Council's new Wakefield One complex.
Wakefield One will offer a single point for local council-run services, including a museum. The college will then undertake a £1m revamp of the Wood Street site as part of its plans.
David Dagger, the council's cabinet member with responsibility for culture, said: "This is a new exciting step for our Museum, moving to a new, fully-accessible building."
Wakefield College principal Sam Wright added: "Governors at the college have approved a £1m refurbishment that will retain the unique character of the existing building, allowing it to become a recognised performing arts venue in the heart of Wakefield."
