Athletics event 'unaffected' by strike action
Leisure trust Glasgow Life has confirmed that the Super 8 Athletics event will be held at Scotstoun Stadium tonight (8 July) as planned, despite a threat of industrial action.
Trade unions representing the organisation's workers had sought to disrupt the event by holding a day-long strike at both the venue and Glasgow Club Scotstoun in protest at planned spending cuts. However, a Glasgow Life spokesperson said: "The unions have failed to disrupt both the international athletics event and the running of Glasgow's busiest sports facility. By all reports, it is business as usual at Scotstoun.
"This dispute is not about job losses. We have promised to protect jobs and services at a time when many other staff in both public and private sectors are facing redundancy." Museums and leisure facilities operated by Glasgow Life have been subject to industrial action after the trust announced that it is looking to save £3.4m in the current financial year.
