A £15m leisure centre has won an award for best large non-residential building in Leicestershire.

Hinckley Leisure Centre, which opened in the summer, won the prize at the ProCon (Leicestershire Property and Construction) Awards, seeing off competition from the Leicester Riders Arena and the University of Leicester Centre for Medicine.

The leisure centre has an eight-lane 25-metre pool with moveable floor, a community pool with moveable floor, a splash pad wet play area, spectator seating, sauna and steam room, eight-court sports hall, a 140-station fitness suite, spin and fitness studios and a cafe.

Places for People Leisure manages the facility on behalf of the council.

The judges said they chose the leisure centre for the award because it demonstrated a creative approach to property development in addition to design excellence, construction quality and innovation, and visual impact.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council leader Mike Hall, who received the trophy on behalf of the authority, said: “With this award Hinckley’s new leisure centre has rightly been recognised as an iconic building in Leicestershire and Rutland and I am sure that this stunning design will survive the test of time.”

Martin Anderson, capital projects director at Places for People Leisure, said: “We are extremely pleased that Hinckley Leisure Centre has received this award. Places for People Leisure were awarded the design, build, operate and maintain contract for Hinckley Leisure Centre by the borough council in 2014, along with our architects, Roberts Limbrick, and construction partners, Pellikaan Construction.

"The three-storey centre, which was completed in April this year, was purposely designed to complement its parkland setting in Argents Mead, incorporating natural materials, a green roof and a café which opens onto the surrounding park area.”
