BBC retains Premier League highlights
The BBC has reached a deal with the Premier League to retain the rights to broadcast free-to-air highlights of the competition until the end of the 2012-13 season.
A spokesperson for the Premier League revealed that the broadcaster had bid the same amount as the previous agreement, which comes to an end at the end of next season. It means that the BBC will continue to show Match of the Day on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings and MOTD2 on Sunday evenings. Highlights will also be made available on demand for the first time, with MOTD2 available on BBC iPlayer.
Premier League chief executive, Richard Scudamore, said: "The free-to-air highlights are a critical part of the Premier League's broadcast presence; helping the competition and our clubs reach the maximum domestic audience possible." Roger Mosey, director of BBC Sport, said: "Match of the Day's audiences have been growing strongly during the current contract, and it remains the place where most people in the UK watch top league action."
