Barnsley Premier Leisure, in association with Royston Lifesaving Club, has launched lifesaving lessons at Royston Leisure Centre.

Swimming instructors and lifeguards from both the sports trust and the club will be involved in teaching the course, called Get Safe this Summa.

Children will be given advice about the dangers of being in and around water as well as learning the necessary survival skills to ensure that if they get in to difficulty they have a better chance of rescue. The course will also make them better equipped to help others in an emergency situation.

Edward Lim, swimming development manager for Barnsley Premier Leisure said: "With the summer months upon us, it could be even more tempting for children to jump into public lakes, rivers or reservoirs to cool down, but easy to forget the harmful effects that cold water can have on a person's stamina and strength.

"With the new lifesaving sessions, we aim to educate young people of the risks of water and protect them from accidents occurring and to know what to do in these situations."

Barnsley Premier Leisure will also be hosting Aqua Camps this summer, every Thursday, at Hoyland leisure Centre, with games and activities for children between eight and 16 years old.
