Barking Park visitor centre takes shape
Work to construct the steel structure of a new visitor centre in east London's Barking Park has been completed - part of a wider multi-million pound redevelopment project.
Located next to the boating lake, the new facility is set to form the centrepiece of the park. A lake jetty for pleasure boating; a boathouse; and a play area are also being created. Other elements of the project include the renovation of a derelict lido into a wet play area, as well as extensive landscaping and the creation of wildflower meadows.
Kier Regional and Vinci Construction are undertaking the scheme on behalf of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, with work due for completion by the end of the year. Bert Collins, the council's cabinet member for culture and sport, said: "The centre will be the focal point for visitors to the park and will play host to many community events.
"Its location means it will have lovely views of the lake and it will be right next door to the wet play area in the renovated lido site." The Heritage Lottery Fund has contributed £3.5m towards the scheme, in addition to match funding from the council.
