The increase in memberships was robust and increased by 108,000 in the quarter to nearly 1.5m. We remain confident to grow our network by around 100 clubs in 2017
René Moos, chief executive of Basic-Fit

Increased memberships from club openings have helped boost revenues at Europe’s largest fitness operator, Basic-Fit.

In its Q3 trading update, the business reported that in the nine months to the end of September, membership numbers rose 25 per cent year on year, to 1.47m.

This helped revenues increase 26 per cent year on year, to €238m (US$277.7m, £211.8m) from €189m (US$220.5m, £168.2m) in 2016.

The rise in membership numbers and revenues is a result of club openings. In the first three quarters of 2017, the brand opened 78 clubs and closed four, taking its total number of sites to 493.

The majority of the net new club openings were in France (62), six in Belgium, three in the Netherlands, two in Spain and one in Luxembourg.

Commenting on the third quarter results, René Moos, Basic-Fit chief executive, said: “We had again a very strong quarter in which the number of club openings and the pipeline developed in line with the club rollout plan.

“Also, the increase in memberships was robust and increased by 108,000 in the quarter to nearly 1.5m. We remain confident to grow our network by around 100 clubs in 2017.”
