The development of a new multi-million pound sports complex in Basildon, Essex, has reached the next stage after work to construct the venue's steel structure was completed.

Basildon District Council (BDC) has announced that water testing has now started on Basildon Sporting Village's 50m pool, with the concrete lining to be filled with water to test its integrity before tiling and rendering can begin. The water testing phase will take eight days to fill the pool, before water is left for two days to enable the facility to be examined for evaporation levels against a temporary tank.

Meanwhile, more than 820 tonnes and 5,000 pieces of steel have been used to form the structure of the complex, which is scheduled to open in April 2011 ahead of the London Olympics. When complete, Basildon Sporting Village will include the first 50m pool to be developed in Essex, as well as facilities for athletics, basketball, five-a-side football and badminton, as well as a regional gymnastics centre.

A fitness centre, a multi-purpose studio and a climbing wall will also form part of the scheme, which is being led by BDC and Basildon Renaissance Partnership and has received funding from a range of sources. BDC cabinet member for leisure and the arts Kevin Blake said: "It seems remarkable at how much work has taken place since the project launched back in October.

"The steel frame is now completed and demonstrates the true scale of this ambitious project, and shows what a great asset it will be for Basildon and the whole area." Stephen Castle, cabinet member for education and the 2012 Games at Essex County Council, added: "The range of activities at the Sporting Village will be inspiring, encouraging active lifestyles and a participation in sport. I look forward to its opening in 2011."
