Parkview International has denied reports that it is shelving its £1.1bn plans for a leisure and entertainment destination at Battersea Power Station in London.

An article in the Sunday Times claimed that the developer has now submitted a planning application to build houses and offices on an adjacent site instead.

Ian Rumgay, Parkview’s communications director, said: “The proposals that have been submitted to Wandsworth Council are intended to give definition –where none existed before – to the scope of works that Parkview will undertake to ensure full restoration and preservation of the power station building.

“We are nearly ready to start construction on site and before that it is important that there is clear agreement between ourselves and planning authority as to what constitutes full and complete discharge of our obligations with respect to restoration of the Power Station.

“It does not mean the end of the works to the Power Station or that the building will not be publicly accessible and left as an empty shell. It continues to be our ambition that the Power Station will become a dynamic new leisure and entertainment address for London.”

Parkview’s plans include the transformation of the power station into a leisure and retail destination and the creation of both a resort and a conference hotel, residential units, office space, a product showcase building and an underground auditorium as well as a multiplex cinema, health club and spa and exclusive one-table restaurant at the top of one of the chimneys.

Meanwhile, Parkview has also unveiled plans to launch a series of cultural events open to the public at the power station.

The first event is The China Power Station: Part 1 Exhibition, which is being staged by the Serpentine Gallery and takes place over the next month.

Vicky Hwang, Parkview’s leasing director, said: “It is our intention that the Power Station will become the focus for a new cultural and creative hub in London and these events will help to establish our credentials as a place if imagination and inspiration.”
