Beauty queen suffers severe burns at Taipei spa
A former US beauty queen has been badly burned after suffering an extreme reaction to skincare products at a Taiwanese spa.
According to the New Hampshire Union Leader newspaper, Alyssa Spellman suffered burns on more than 35 per cent of her body following a recent trip to a spa in Taipei.
It is not known which spa Spellman visited or what brand of products were used.
Spellman reportedly went to the spa during a break in a three-month foreign exchange trip from Emerson College in Boston, US, where she is a student.
According to the newspaper, Spellman was still suffering “intense pain” from her burns, which were mainly focused on her arms and torso. She was being cared for at a burns centre in Taipei, following her release from an intensive care unit.
However, Spellman's plastic surgeon is hopeful she will heal without the need for skin grafts – and without scarring.
Spellman won the Miss New Hampshire crown in 2004.
