The Greensand Trust has partnered with Central Bedfordshire Council to acquire Rushmere Park near Leighton Buzzard.

The 210-acre park, which was formerly owned by the Stockgrove Park Estate, has been in private ownership for years. It comprises parkland and mixed woodland, with a variety of habitats including open grassland, heathland and lakes.

The acquisition was funded by a £573,000 grant from the Department of Communities and Local Government and private third sector funding and donations, including £120,000 from the Peter Smith Charitable Trust.

The park is currently closed to the public (though footpaths running though it will be open) due to work on making the site safe for public access.

In the future, a range of zones will be created in the park where visitors can enjoy the landscape, various habitats and the wildlife it supports and a variety of leisure, recreational activities and events.

Mrs Brough, the former owner of the estate, said: "I am so pleased that everyone is now going to be able to enjoy the beauty of this wonderful estate. I hope visitors will come throughout the year, to follow the amazing and subtle changes that happen through the seasons."
