Biking incentive for young people
A new scheme to provide young people from deprived areas with bikes and the knowledge and skills to maintain and safely use them has been launched in Havant Borough.
The scheme 're-cycle' is a collaboration between Havant Borough Council and Asda Wal-
Successful applicants are designated to one of the volunteer mentors and instructed on how to assemble and care for their bike. They will be trained in the cycle proficiency test and when they pass will be asked to sign a six-month contract for the free loan of the bike on the condition that they use the equipment safely and ensure that it is roadworthy.
After this time, bikes will be inspected and if candidates have abided by the conditions set out on the contract, the bike will then be theirs to keep.
Brian Pratt, community development officer at HBC said: 'I think the scheme is an excellent idea which will prove very successful among the local children and their families.'
Since the launch, organisers say they have been inundated with phone calls from interested locals, many of which have donated further equipment to the scheme. Details: [email protected]
