As part of its bid to be named European Capital of Culture in 2008, Birmingham has set its sights on hosting an IAAF Athletics Grand Prix and the British Olympic Trials.

The plans follow the city's successful hosting of the World Indoor Athletics Championships this month.

World Athletics' general secretary, Istvan Gyulai said of the championships: 'This has been an event for the entire community and this is a key ingredient for us. The facilities, judges and athletic officials are all top class. The crowd is great, the IAAF is very impressed.'

Cllr Ian Ward, the council's cabinet member for leisure, sport and culture, said: 'Birmingham's ability to stage major events that bring all of its communities together is one of the strengths that has won us the nomination [for European Capital of Culture 2008].'
