Icelandic spa company Blue Lagoon has revealed plans to open a series of city spas on an international basis, beginning with a joint venture spa and fitness centre in Glæsibær, Reykjavík, opening at the end of this year.

The 35,520sq ft (3,300sq m) Glæsibær centre will be operated with the Hreyfing fitness group and carry Blue Lagoon ingredients, previously only found at the Blue Lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon itself is one of Iceland’s most popular health tourist attractions and is surrounded by a lava field formed in 1226.

The central lagoon utilises natural, geothermal seawater and holds six million litres of water, all of which is renewed within 40 hours.

The new city spa building in Glæsibær, Reykjavík, was designed by architectural firm Teiknistofan á Ó_instorgi while VA Arkitects was responsible for the spa’s interior design.

Speaking about further rollout of the city spa concept, Anna G. Sverrisdóttir, managing director of Blue Lagoon’s domestic operations, said: “We are planning to open Blue Lagoon spas in other cites. Opening the first city spa in Reykjavík is a very important step for us. London is one of the cities Blue Lagoon is looking at in the near future.”

The Blue Lagoon company was founded in 1992, with formal operation beginning at the first treatment centre in 1994. In 1999, The Blue Lagoon spa was launched while in June 2005, a clinic for psoriasis sufferers opened.
