Body image worries a barrier to getting fit
Concerns over body image is among the most common reasons preventing people from joining health clubs.
Research by Central YMCA shows that 85 per cent of people blame the fitness industry for promoting unrealistic body ideals, while 77 per cent of people feel gyms and fitness clubs should do more to attract people with a wider range of body shapes and sizes.
Meanwhile, 69 per cent think that gyms and the people who use them can be intimidating.
Lisa Clough, a personal trainer working at the Central YMCA club in London said: "There is a lot of pressure on people to look a certain way if they work in the fitness industry.
"I find that being a more realistic body size myself is often encouraging for a lot of people who want to exercise. Just because you aren't the body image ideal, it doesn't mean you aren't fit and healthy."
