Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide has announced that the Book-Cadillac hotel in Detroit, Michigan, US, will operate under the Westin brand following its forthcoming US$180m (£140m, 94m euro) renovation.

The four-star Westin Book-Cadillac Detroit hotel will also feature The Westin Book-Cadillac Detroit Residences, consisting of 67 condos on the top eight floors of the property. The hotel/condominium development will be the first of its kind in Detroit and residents will have access to most of the signature amenities available to hotel guests.

The Ferchill Group, a Cleveland-based real estate and development management company, began renovations on the 455-room, 33-storey hotel project earlier this month. Completion is anticipated for summer 2008.

Facilities will include a fitness centre, a spa pool and a swimming pool as well as 39,000sq ft (3,600sq m) of conference space and an 11,000sq ft (1,020sq m) ballroom.

The Westin Book-Cadillac Detroit hotel is the newest addition to the Westin brand, which signed more than 40 deals last year. At least 50 new hotels are scheduled to open by 2009.

The 82-year-old Italian renaissance-styled hotel was built by the Book Brothers in 1924. It was the tallest building in Detroit and the tallest hotel in the world. After World War II, the property began to decline and closed in 1986.

The property has been listed on the National Registry of Historic Buildings and will be renovated according to National Park Service standards.

Westin Hotels & Resorts – which operates 121 hotels and resorts in 31 countries and territories – is owned by Starwood.

Starwood will also manage a new hotel in Istanbul, Turkey, under its W Hotel brand.

The 130-room W Istanbul property will be developed by Akaretler Otel Isletmeciligive Turizm AS, a company controlled by Turkish businessman Serdar Bilgili. It is scheduled to open in late 2007.

Turkish architects Geomim will combine an Ottoman-style design with the signature design elements of the W brand.

W hotels are also due to open in the Maldives, Barcelona, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Santiago, Athens, Doha and Dubai. Details: www.starwoodhotels.com
