Boy George musical prepares for October launch
Boy George, the DJ and former lead singer with the 80s pop band Culture Club, has written a musical based on a London nightclub.
Taboo takes its name from the notorious Leicester Square nightclub where Boy George spent some of his younger years.
The musical, which will cost in the region of £500,000, is due to open at the end of October, and will be a heterosexual love story set in the club, featuring many of the leading performers of the New Romantic scene, including a young George and Steve Strange, lead singer of the band Visage.
Although George himself will not feature on stage, he is involved with the casting of the musical, which will be played at the Notre Dame Hall - an occasional 350-seater club venue off Leicester Square next door to the old Taboo.
The musical will be directed by Christopher Renshaw, in a step away from his more familiar associations with the operatic world.
