Boy's death leads to leisure centre closure
Hambleton District Council (HDC) has confirmed that Hambleton Leisure Centre in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, will be closed today (26 August) following a fatal incident yesterday.
North Yorkshire Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an eight-year-old boy, who is said to have got into difficulties while using the venue's swimming pool. A spokesperson for the police force said: "The eight-year-old boy, who lives locally, was taken by ambulance to the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton where he was pronounced dead after efforts were made to revive him."
HDC cabinet member for health Peter Wilkinson told the BBC: "This is a tragic accident and we send our condolences to the family of this young boy. We are co-operating with the police in their investigation. As a mark of respect, the leisure centre will be closed until further notice."
