Brent Council opens consultation into Wembley Casino scheme
Brent Council in London has opened a public consultation regarding the supercasino bid for Wembley.
The resort casino scheme, planned by developer Quintain and Las Vegas-based operator Caesars, previously had the backing of the Labour-run council, but the borough’s newly-elected Liberal Democrat and Conservative council is to reconsider whether to continue supporting the bid.
A condition of the supercasino bidding process is that the relevant local authority is willing to licence the site, so without the council’s backing, Wembley would effectively be forced out of the running.
The public consultation, which opens today (10 July) and will end in mid-August, includes an insert and questionnaire in the Brent Magazine, presentations at the area consultative forums and a microsite on the council’s website.
A debate will also be held on 25 July where the local community will be able to learn more about the proposals.
A council spokesperson told Leisure Opportunities last week that the council executive will announce in September whether it will be maintaining its support for the scheme or not.
The outlook does not look good for the casino developers however, as the London Evening Standard last week reported that the new leader of the council, Paul Lorber, has claimed that a Las Vegas-style casino is ‘wrong’ for a residential area like Wembley and said that the majority of the new council is not in favour of the scheme.
The planned Wembley casino was one of eight schemes shortlisted as potential supercasino sites earlier this year by the Casino Advisory Panel (CAP) – alongside Greenwich, Cardiff, Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Blackpool and Sheffield.
