Masterplan unveiled for billion-dollar Brisbane cultural district
International architecture and design practice The NRA Collaborative have outlined their masterplan for a sweeping new entertainment district in Brisbane, Australia.
The proposed precinct, called Brisbane Live, would create an area around the city’s Roma Street featuring entertainment venues, commercial buildings, hotels, residences, restaurants, a retail zone and 12 hectares of parkland.
At the heart of the design is a 17,000-seat arena able to host a multitude of events from music to indoor sports.
The western edges of the precinct host three future cultural facilities “inspired by organic shapes and fluidity”, which NRA says would be used to house theatres and museums.
In a statement, the studio said: “Brisbane Live delivers a culturally rich addition to Brisbane creating entertainment and recreation for the public whilst enhancing the subtropical vision for Brisbane city. It is a truly connected and socially responsive project revitalising an underutilised space within the city’s Central Business District.”
According to media reports in Australia, the project was proposed by venue management company AEG Ogden to complement the successful format of the LA Live arena in Los Angeles.
The cost of the project, which is being assessed by the Queensland state government, would reportedly be AUS$2bn (US$1.5bn, €1.3bn, £1bn).
