Brisbane’s GoMA opens
The Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) and the refurbished Queensland Art Gallery have opened to the public in Brisbane, Australia.
The new 25,600sq m (275,550sq ft) GoMA building is located close to the existing Art Gallery and houses the Australian Cinèmathéque – which features two cinemas and a media gallery – and the Children’s Art Centre.
The new gallery was designed by Sydney-based company Architectus, which was commissioned by the Queensland Government in 2002.
Wayne Goss, chair of the Queensland Art Gallery Board of Trustees, said: “With the addition of GoMA, Queensland Art Gallery remains a single institution with two magnificent sites: the Robin Gibson-designed Gallery – which opened in 1982 – and now the Architectus-designed GoMA.
“The two buildings compliment each other yet remain architecturally distinctive.”
The revamped Queensland Art Gallery features a new glass entrance – directly opposite GoMA – designed by the building’s architect Robin Gibson and features new displays of historical and early modern collections.
