Broadwood Stadium expansion work begins
Construction work has begun on a £6m community sports and leisure facility at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire.
The new 3,800sq m facility, being built by construction firm Mansell – part of the Balfour Beatty Group – will be a two storey development at the north end of the stadium featuring a gymnasium, dance studios, beauty therapy facilities as well as two seven-a-side synthetic sports pitches and children's play areas. JM Architects designed the centre. There will also be a medical room, offices and public amenities including changing rooms.
Jim Logue, learning and leisure committee convener, said: "With the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and the upcoming International Children’s Games being held in Lanarkshire in 2011 this superb sports development will further enhance the sporting opportunities for people across North Lanarkshire. And it will further help Sportscotland achieve its ambition of getting more people involved in physical activities on a more regular basis.” The facility will accompany the existing 8,000-seat multi-use stadium complex, home to Clyde Football Club, which also includes a gymnastics centre, four five-a-side football pitches and a full-size synthetic pitch.
The facility is expected to be completed in 2009.
