Brockwell Lido reopens to the public

The Brockwell Lido has reopened to the public following the completion of the first phase of a £3m redevelopment.

The first phase of the refurbishment of the facility included the redesign of the Lido’s entrance, changing facilities, toilets and pool surrounds.

The second phase – to be completed in September – will include the addition of a new healthy lifestyle area including a spa with hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steamroom and therapy rooms.

A fitness suite with separate changing facilities and a multi-purpose studio will also be introduced.

The scheme, which has received £400,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, is designed to make the facility self-sustainable and no longer reliant on public funding.

The Lido, which is a Grade II listed building was originally opened in 1937 and is operated by leisure trust Fusion on a 25-year lease.

Located within Brockwell Park, the whole front elevation has been taken down and rebuilt six meters further into the park. English Heritage chose this solution from a number of options developed by architects Pollard Thomas Edwards Associates (PTE).

The work on the facility was funded and carried out by Alliance Leisure.

Lib Peck, cabinet member for Environment and Culture on Lambeth Council, said: “Brockwell Lido is one of the jewels in Lambeth’s crown, and enjoyed by thousands of people year on year.

“With the Olympics on the horizon, we want to encourage even more people to use Lambeth’s sports facilities and these fantastic improvements to Brockwell Lido are part of our plans to get more people active and healthy.

“For many people involved in restoration project the work has been a labour of love, and I would like to thank local people who have played a key role in the restoration project and redevelopment work.”
