Broxbourne pool to close
The Lee Valley Leisure Pool in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire will close permanently on 28 September.
The decision to close for good was made by the centre's owner, Lee Valley Regional Park Authority (LVRPA), which deemed the facility too expensive to run to modern standards.
The centre was built in 1978, but received a major £4.5m refurbishment 1998. Since the revamp, the pool has been operated by Leisure COnnection, which, according to LVRPA, fully supported the decision to close.
Facilities at the centre include a large free form leisure pool with wave machine, separate teaching pool, a children's soft play area and Harpers Fitness gym.
Vivien Blacker, deputy chief executive of LVRPA, said: "We're simply unable to justify the level of expenditure of public money that would be needed to bring the pool up to modern standards."
All existing members will be offer a refund against their memberships which run beyond the closure date, and Leisure Connection is currently investigating the potential for membership transfers to other local leisure facilities.
The future use for the centre is still unknown, although the LVRPA is currently in discussions with Broxbourne Borough Council on a development brief which aims to improve the area as a leisure destination.
