Buenos Aires, Argentina has been selected host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), beating off competition from Glasgow, Scotland and Medellin, Colombia.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had said that all three of the final bidding would be capable of hosting the games, but Buenos Aires’ bid including it’s ‘Green Corridor’, which will see 23 sports take place in an area of 1.5km (0.93m) came out on top.

The Argentine delegation, which had failed in four previous bid attempts, will now stage the 2018 event in the city of Buenos Aries that was described as “ideal for sporting competition”.

A delegation including Britain's most successful Olympian, Sir Chris Hoy, British Olympic Association (BOA) chairman Sebastian Coe, organisers, politicians and school pupils travelled to Lausanne, Switzerland, to make their case for Glasgow.

For the Colombian bid, the country's President - Juan Manuel Santos - lead the delegation for the final presentation and vote.

The Buenos Aires victory comes as a somewhat of a surprise as they received significant criticism in the IOC Evaluation report released last month.

Singapore hosted the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010 and Nanjing, China will host next in 2014.
