CEA: UK cinema set for 'landmark' year
UK cinemas are set to benefit from a "landmark year" in 2011 as admissions remain stable and box office revenues grow, according to the Cinema Exhibitors' Association (CEA).
CEA senior policy executive Dee Davison told Leisure Management (Q3, 2011) that the ongoing digitisation of cinema screens will have a "fundamental impact" on the sector. Davison said that, while cinema goers may not necessarily notice the change, digital screens will pave the way for the exhibition of 3D content and "alternative content".
"The future drivers for the cinema market will undoubtedly revolve around the potential offered by digital technology," said Davison. "The lower costs of building and operating digital cinemas, and the potentially greater revenue, means that we are likely to see the growth of a number of 'mini-complex models' in smaller towns and communities across the UK."
