Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWCC) is to consider plans for the investment of more than £20m in local leisure facilities as part of a wider scheme to improve provision.

The council's executive will be asked to approve a masterplan outlining £59.1m worth of improvements for leisure facilities across borough at its meeting on 29 September. It comes after CWCC carried out a review of all provision - both private and council-owned - in the region, with a report identifying Chester for investment priorities two and three.

Priority two, scheduled for 2012-14, will see the development of two sports centres offering wet and dry facilities in the east and west of the city, including an £11m complex to include a regional diving centre. Another £8m development will house a swimming development facility. Meanwhile, priority three - scheduled for 2014-16 - would see a £1m contribution to overhaul Chester City Baths.

Knights Kavanagh Page conducted the review on behalf of the council in order to guide plans for a new network of leisure facilities across the CWCC region. Herbert Manley, the council's executive member for prosperity, said: "The authority wants the best leisure facilities available to help improve the quality of life for residents across the borough.

"If approved, these recommendations for Chester will obviously replace current outlets like the Northgate Arena with top quality facilities designed to meet the highest standards required in future decades."
