Cameron calls on businesses to help create 'Big Society'
David Cameron has appealed for UK businesses to help him implement his vision of a 'Big Society' - in exchange for lower taxes and "less interference" from government on corporate matters.
Speaking to the Business in the Community Leadership Summit in London yesterday (2 December 2010), Cameron hailed the practice of health insurers subsidising health club memberships and promoting physical activity as an example of what he sees as the 'essence of Big Society'.
"The long-term, lasting way to achieve the lower taxes, low regulation and dynamic economy we all want to see is to solve the problems that give rise to an over-burdening state," he said, referring to issues such as obesity, joblessness and social breakdown.
"Whether it's health insurance companies promoting public health by offering discounts for going to the gym, or educational computer games for children business can do so much to help.
"And if business is prepared to do that, government can go even further in cutting taxes, removing regulations and reducing the overall burdens on business. That is the essence of the deal. So the question is what exactly is it that we want business to do?"
