Canal and River Trust takes control of English and Welsh waterways

A new charity - the Canal and River Trust (CRT) - has taken over responsibility for more than 2,000 miles (3,219km) of historic waterways throughout England and Wales.
The trust has been handed control of canals and rivers in what is the largest single transfer of a public body into the charitable sector, following the closure of British Waterways.
It is hoped the move will give the 10 million people who visit and use England and Wales' waterways an increased role in ensuring their maintenance and rejuvenation.
To help launch CRT, the government has committed to a 15-year grant funding agreement. It will also generate commercial income - including boat licences and moorings.
Meanwhile, the trust has signed up three corporate partners - including Google, which will help encourage people discover waterways through Google Maps.
The People's Postcode Lottery is pledging £1m towards conservation work, while the Co-operative Bank will offer banking products that also support the trust.
CRT chair Tony Hales said: "The Canal and River Trust opens an exciting new chapter in the waterways' long history and gives a chance for everyone who cares for them to play a part in their future.
By harnessing public goodwill and energy our canals and rivers can breathe much needed new life into our towns, cities and countryside. It's an amazing opportunity and we can't wait to get going."
Environment secretary Caroline Spelman added: "By placing our waterways in trust for the nation, we are giving all those who love our rivers and canals an opportunity to get involved in how their local river or canal is run."
British Waterways continues to exist in Scotland under the name Scottish Canals.
