Canterbury City Council has approved planning permission for the £25.5m refurbishment of the city's Marlowe Theatre.

The redevelopment will see the site rebuilt and expanded to create a new venue with increased capacity and improved facilities.

The project includes the creation of a new three-tier main auditorium, increasing the number of seats from 950 to 1,200, as well as providing a new, second performance space designed to develop and promote new talent. Enhanced restaurant and foyer facilities are also among the plans.

Councillor Harry Cragg, the council's executive member for culture, said: "The new Marlowe will provide a huge boost to the arts in Kent, and alongside other local initiatives will make East Kent one of the country's leading cultural destinations."

The theatre is expected to close in early 2009 to allow work to begin, and it is hoped the new theatre, designed by Keith William Architects, will reopen in 2011.

The majority of the funding for the project has come from Marlowe Theatre's owner and operator, Canterbury City Council, while Kent County Council and the South East England Development Agency have also contributed towards the scheme. A fundraising project is now underway to raise the remaining £6m for the redevelopment.
