Cardiff Council to mull ice rink proposals
Cardiff Council's executive is being recommended to cancel an ongoing tender exercise for the procurement of a new Ice Arena when it meets later today (14 July).
According to a report due to go before the committee, the current preferred tenderer had not provided "satisfactory answers" relating to a funding facility for the development. The report also said that the council's approach to a reserve bidder for the scheme had been unsuccessful after that bidder said it was unable to secure funding for the Ice Arena.
It is now proposed that the provision of an Ice Arena be included in the first stage of the second phase of the Waterfront scheme at the International Sports Village site – the procurement process for which councillors will also be asked to approve. The report said: "The intention is that such inclusion would not require a subsidy from the council. This is because the procurement for Stage One of Phase Two of the Waterfront will include retail, bars and restaurants, the commercial value of which will facilitate the delivery of the Ice Arena as the priority requirement within Stage One.
"Those parties who have previously expressed interest in delivering an ice facility will be free to consider the new tender opportunity."
