Cardiff is to host a month of arts exhibitions and events throughout October as part of the city’s centenary celebrations.

The Cardiff Contemporary Visual Arts Festival programme will feature more than 25 exhibitions and events with art work created by more than 200 national and international artists.

It is supported by Cardiff Council and the Millennium Commission’s Urban Cultural Programme.

Yvette Vaughan-Jones, director of the Cardiff 2005 cultural programme, said: “We have been able to bring together and support a wide range of visual arts events to celebrate the centenary.

“This is the first time art has been brought to the people on this scale and I hope that this will allow everyone to appreciate the wealth of talent in our city.”

Events during the month include an outdoor exhibition in which artists from cities linked to Cardiff’s historical trading routes will set up installations in a series of ships’ containers, as well as three temporary shows at the National Museum & Gallery.

A number of solo exhibitions will also be produced during the month, including one by Italian photographer Raffaela Mariniello at Ffotogallery.

Nigel Howells, executive member for culture, leisure and sport at Cardiff City Council, said: “We have a vibrant visual arts scene, from the art studios across the city, internationally-acknowledged artist-run galleries such as g39 and Tactile Bosch and venues such as the Chapter and the national Museum & Gallery enhancing the cultural profile of the city.”
