A Victorian velodrome in Carmarthen, west Wales, is set to be revamped as part of a £323,000 project to enhance the town park.
The facility is believed to be the world's oldest outdoor, concrete velodrome still in continuous use, having originally opened in 1900. It was also the site at which the concept of pacing was introduced, where cyclists reach higher speeds by following in the slipstream of a motorcycle. As well as the restoration of the velodrome, the connecting walkways will be refurbished with the boundary railings extended around the whole park. New outdoor gym equipment is also set to be installed as part of the revamp. Carmarthenshire County Council will implement the project after matching £258,000 of European funding, part of a £7m package of schemes across the county to have received Rural Development Plan grants. The council's regeneration executive board member, councillor Clive Scourfield, said: "It is a wonderful facility and the refurbishment works will improve it even further and help attract more visitors. "It is part of a huge investment in facilities in the Carmarthen area and supports the innovative work our council is leading to support and develop our communities." The park, which is managed by Carmarthen Town Council, is used for a number of activities, including games, circuses and festivals.
