Carter museum to receive US$10m revamp
The former US President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn have announced plans for a US$10m (£6.8m, 7.86m euro) renovation his Presidential museum in Atlanta, Georgia.
The project, designed by Patrick Gallagher and fabricated by Design & Production, will chronicle the life of the 39th President from his birth in 1924 through to post-Presidency.
The current museum, built in 1986, will close on 27 April and reopen on 1 October – the date of Carter’s 85th birthday.
“Rosalynn and I hope that the new museum will be a teaching tool not only for students of history, but for people of all ages eager to learn about the world beyond their own borders, where for 27 years The Carter Centre has worked to build hope for suffering people,” said Carter.
The 24,000sq ft (2,229sq m) new museum, which will be totally funded by private donations, will have a completely new look apart from the existing Oval Office replica.
New features will include the “A Day in the Life of the President” exhibition, which aims to be a true-to-life West Wing experience.
The Jimmy Carter Library and Museum is one of 13 Presidential Libraries around the US managed by the National Archives and Records Administration.
