Cash boost for regional museums
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has announced grants in excess of £850,000 for eleven museums and galleries in the east and south of England.
A part of the DCMS/Wolfson Museums & Galleries Improvement fund 2004/2005, the grants are aimed to help the institutions to improve the quality of their displays, access and environmental controls.
Norfolk Museums & Archaeology Service received £100,000 for the establishment of a Hidden History Archaeology Gallery, while the Museum of English Rural Life was given £136,000 for its Making of the Countryside Exhibition.
The largest single grant was given to Tate St Ives, which received £185,000 for sun-screening and lighting controls.
Arts minister, Estelle Morris, said: “These grants will help museums and galleries, both large and small, across England to improve collection presentations and access.”
Overall, £4m will be donated to museums from the DCMS/Wolfson Foundation funds by the end of 2005.
