Change of Scene training project for Northampton
More than 40 young people from East Northampton have taken part in the first phase of a new outdoor activity training initiative aimed at youngsters from deprived backgrounds.
Funded by a £229,000 National Lottery Grant - through Natural England - the Change of Scene project gives youngsters the opportunity to access nature through adventurous and creative activities, while gaining valuable qualifications.
Running until 2012, the scheme is the result of a partnership between Northampton Borough Council, Northamptonshire County Council, Northamptonshire Police, four residents associations and the Rotary Clubs of Northampton.
The project is open to young people aged 13 to 19 and gives participants the chance to climb mountains, experience outdoor sports, learn camping and survival skills and explore the outdoors.
Tim Howell, Change of Scene project coordinator said: "In just a few months we have helped dozens of young people enjoy exciting adventures and learn new skills. We have some exciting plans to get more and more young people involved in these life-changing experiences.
