Chester Town Hall scheme moves forward
An external operator will be sought to run the commercial operations at Chester's revamped Victorian Town Hall, after the recommendation was approved by the local authority.
It follows the decision by Cheshire West and Chester Council's (CWCC) executive to back the latest stage of plans to transform the historic property into a cultural and function venue.
More than £2.5m has already been invested in repairs to the roof and Gothic stonework, plus the installation of a new lift and toilets at the Grade II*-listed building.
A third phase, which will include the upgrade of interior facilities such as the staging and the technical equipment, is due to be completed by March 2012.
CWCC has approved the transfer of events and hospitality management to an external group under a concession-rental agreement with revenue sharing.
Stuart Parker, the council's executive member for culture and recreation, said: "Transfer to a provider with the right commercial and specialist skill in event management and catering can only help to improve our overall offer to the public.
"The successful bidder will have the obvious incentive to make a commercial success of the Town Hall operation whilst protecting the civic and community usage."
