City of Manchester stadium handover complete
Sport England and Manchester City Council have officially handed over the City of Manchester stadium to the new tenants, Manchester City FC.
Athletes Darren Campbell and Katharine Merry represented Sport England at the handover as Manchester City manager, Kevin Keegan, held the first warm-up session in the new venue with local children.
The facility was constructed primarily using public money – Sport England contributed £77m, with a further £33m coming from the council.
The stadium, which was the centrepiece for the Manchester Commonwealth Games, will have a strong community use – 100 days a year will be set aside for community access. Also, when gates exceed 32,000, a portion of the additional ticket sales will be reinvested in local sports development work.
As the anchor tenant, Manchester City remains responsible for the repair and upkeep of the facility, taking on all operational risks and responsibilities.
