Civic Trust Award for Brockwell Lido
Following the 2007 refurbishment of the Grade II listed Brockwell Lido, the facility has won a Civic trust Award.
Civic Trust Awards are awarded to buildings that are architecturally advanced, exciting, innovative or striking and of benefit to their local community.
The £3.5m revamp of the South London lido - which was undertaken by and is operated by sports trust Fusion Lifestyle - included a new 100-station health and fitness suite, three studios and a spa area, changing facilities and a reception area. A new café is currently under construction.
Peter Kay, Fusion’s CEO said: “It's a marvellous accolade to everyone involved in the project.
"In addition to £2.5m raised through Alliance Leisure, Fusion secured £0.5m Heritage Lottery Funding and by committing £0.5m of our own reserves to the project, undertook the role of “owner” in carrying out the liabilities and obligations of renovating and then looking after the building.
"As a heritage site, the refurbishment and extension of the poolside buildings needed a carefully designed plan to ensure the integrity of the original concept and atmosphere of the 'Beach' were not lost.
"The huge pool (50x25m) is still the focal point of the refurbished grade II listed art deco building. However, the old business model – relying solely on unpredictable summer revenue from pool use – was not sustainable."
Fusion appointed architects, Pollard Thomas Edwards (PTEa), to execute a bold and radical design which involved moving the outside wall of the south wing of the Lido six metres out into the park, whilst retaining the inside wall enclosing the pool. This doubled the width of the old changing areas and created internal space for dance studios, areas for exercise and indulgence, and a children’s activity centre.
Stephen Parker, business development manager for Alliance Leisure, said: "We are delighted that Brockwell Lido has been awarded a Civic Trust Award.
"The success of this historical site is a true testament of recognition that a partnership approach is the way forward.
"There were a number of issues that arose on site and each time they were overcome by the partners dealing with them in a timely manner, which meant that costs were kept on budget and the project was completed on time."
