Classic praise for Albert Dock
The Albert Dock development in Liverpool, largest group of Grade 1 listed buildings in the UK, has been included in a book listing 50 examples of definitive architecture created up to the year 1900.
The dock was opened in 1846 and closed in 1972, and pictures of the buildings - provided by Ron Jones Associates / Merseyside Photo Library - share the pages of the German publication 50 Klassiker Architektur vor 1900 with sites including the Parthenon in Athens, the Colosseum in Rome and the Eiffel Tower and Versailles in France.
Regeneration of the Albert Dock site - adjacent to Liverpool Pier Head and now a popular heritage attraction - began with the opening of the Merseyside Maritime Museum in 1980. The development offers pubs, wine bars, restaurants, cafes, museums, art galleries, a gym and an hotel, in addition to retail and residential space.
Refurbishment of the area was undertaken by the Albert Dock Co, a subsidiary of Arrowcroft Holdings, in association with the Merseyside Development Corporation. Details: www.albertdock.com
