Clwydian Range AONB expansion approved
Welsh environment minister John Griffiths has backed plans to extend the Clywdian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) by an additional 230sq km (88.8sq miles).
An area of land within the counties of Wrexham and Denbighshire will now be incorporated into the AONB, which includes the Vale of Llangollen and parts of the Dee Valley.
The minister took the decision after considering a Countryside Council for Wales order and will lead to the creation of Wales' first new AONB for more than a quarter of a century.
Griffiths said the extension was 'crucial' to the Welsh economy: "AONB status for this area will help safeguard its natural beauty and promote sustainable development.
"The AONB 'brand' may also help to draw in an increased number of tourists to enjoy the area's natural beauty."
Countryside Council for Wales chair Morgan Parry added: "While the designation gives the area the national recognition it deserves, the key to its success will rest with local management.
"We now look forward to working with the local authorities of Wrexham, Flintshire and Denbighshire, their local communities and landowners, to realise the environmental, social and economic opportunities of this national designation."
