Coe calls for unity in run-up to 2012
Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) Lord Coe has rallied the leaders of Britain’s Olympic sports to produce champions for the 2012 London Games.
In a speech at UK Sport’s Major Events Conference in London, he said a haul of gold medals at the Games was essential to making the London Olympics a success.
“Quite simply, the Games are the biggest opportunity sport in this country has ever had. It is one we must not squander,” he said.
Coe also urged sporting leaders to deliver the best possible training and coaching structures to give UK athletes the best chance of winning medals at the London Games.
“We must all face up to the challenge and all sporting bodies must work and plan together to get these structures right.
“My plea now is for sport in the UK to work as one with UK Sport, sport councils, the British Olympic Association and the British Paralympic Association to ensure we get channels of support right for our young stars of the future.”
London 2012 director of sport, Debbie Jevans, also announced that LOCOG would establish a Sports Commission which will include athletes providing feedback to organisers on sporting matters, from the sports competition schedule to conditions in the athletes village.
