Columbus Museum of Art reveals plans for new wing
The Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio, US, has revealed plans for the third and final phase of its US$63m (47.23m euro, £39.66m) expansion, set to start in late spring.
The US$37.6m (28.19m euro, £23.67m) project includes a two-storeyed addition to the museum's eastern side to include new gallery, event and meeting spaces.
It will replace a sculpture garden in the existing space, which will move to the north side of the museum where there is currently parking.
Columbus-based architecture firm DesignGroup has refined and will implement the master plan, designed by New York firm Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects.
The purpose of the overall expansion is for the museum to meet industry standards and attract bigger and better exhibitions.
Already, new office space has been developed for museum staff, a new entrance garden has been opened, and facilities have been improved through the renovation of the museum's Broad St building.
The museum currently exhibits artworks within the same 10 gallery spaces it did when it opened in 1931, despite its collection growing from 500 to around 10,000 objects.
Around 200,000 people visit the gallery each year and highlights of the collection include its Impressionist, German Expressionist and Cubist art works.
