Community gets moving to celebrate One KX anniversary
An arts performance involving more than 200 people aged between three and 80 took place last month to celebrate the first anniversary of One KX, the community centre founded to inspire a healthier King's Cross.
Move! marked the culmination of a series of arts, music and dance workshops organised as part of a festival called the One KX's Big Arts Week, on 14-18 July. People from 35 different groups in the area took part in the festival, including schools, youth clubs and community and housing associations, with drama, music and dance professionals volunteering their time to facilitate.
Emma-Jane Trivett, associate director, community, at One KX, said: "As well as giving people the opportunity to challenge and enjoy themselves creatively, Move! was about learning, sharing and appreciating what we have to offer as a community as a whole. "That so many individuals from all around King's Cross - of different interests and backgrounds, spanning such a vast age group - participated in this unique event is in itself something to be celebrated."
One KX's centre director Arti Nanda added: "One KX aspires to be a community centre that brings local people together - no matter what their age, social or ethnic background - through health, fitness, arts, social and community activities. Within its first year, One KX has managed to achieve this and has become a bustling community centre encouraging good health, education and learning with a diverse range of users and participants. "Looking ahead, we'll be growing further by offering an even wider range of opportunities to help improve the lives of people living and working in King's Cross.
"As well as health and arts provision, we'll be developing programmes that encourage individuals and groups to unleash their creative potential, and enhance their career aspirations." One KX is operated by Central YMCA.
