Construction on MAD Architects' Himalayas Centre nears completion
MAD Architects' Nanjing Zendai Himalayas Centre (NZHC) – a mixed-use development inspired by the highest mountain range in the world – is on track for completion in 2020.
First conceived in 2012, the 560,000 sq m complex – which is located in Nanjing, China – was designed to represent what MAD have described as the Chinese concept of "shanshui", a merging of "humanity and nature".
Once complete, the property will take the form of a small village surrounded by mountain-like skyscrapers and accommodate a selection of restaurants, hotels, and retail outlets.
NZHC will also feature footbridges, trees, waterfalls, and ponds – all of which will symbolise the ways manmade objects can be integrated into natural environments.
In a statement, the firm noted: "The scheme seeks to restore the spiritual harmony between humanity and nature through the integration of contemplative spaces that, while immersing inhabitants in nature, still meets the conveniences of modern-day living."
The architects also explained that the site’s green areas and plazas would have a social function, collectively creating "a spiritual and poetic retreat in the middle of the city".
