A groundbreaking ceremony has marked the start of construction work on The Pentagon by Sanford Health, a new 160,000sq ft (14,864sq m) sports complex in South Dakota, US.

Sioux Falls-based integrated health system Sanford Health is behind the JLG Architects-designed scheme, which will comprise six high school regulation and two professional/college practice basketball courts.

A "heritage" court will also be included in the centre of the building, which will provide an NBA/college-size facility with a design inspired by 1950s and 1960s basketball.

The floorspace at The Pentagon by Sanford Health can be configured to offer 11 volleyball courts and space for wrestling, dance and other community events.

Nate White, Sanford Health chief operating officer for the Sioux Falls division, said: "Some may wonder why would a health system invest in this type of project. But this is what we do as an organisation.

"While it is always our goal to heal those who need our care when they are ill, it is also our mission to keep people healthy. That includes giving them opportunities and resources to stay healthy."
