Telford and Wrekin Council (TWC) has appointed construction group Morgan Sindall as the main contractor for the proposed refurbishment of the Shropshire town's ice rink.

The scheme will form part of the wider £250m Southwater development and is to comprise internal and external improvements, as well as an extension with new soft play facilities.

Meanwhile, a new restaurant or bar will be constructed to the front of the adjacent bowling alley and Mecca Bingo site. Work is due to start on site at the end of the month (May).

The new-look ice rink is due to open in October, with the remainder of the development to be completed by the end of the year. The existing rink will be closed during the project.

It is expected the revamp will increase visitor numbers and support other leisure schemes to form part of the Southwater development, including a new 11-screen Cineworld cinema.
