Since all the furniture was made out of the same material, it was important for us that the wood was light and at at the same time had a 'soft' feel.
– Anton Bak

Vermland design studio has created an interior for a 100sq m (1070sq ft) restaurant in Copenhagen that is made entirely out of the wood from a single Douglas fir tree.

Hverdagen was conceived to serve everyday food with an approach that is experimental and sustainable – in terms of both the ingredients used and the space in which it is served.

The interior was inspired by the trends for casual, relaxed dining and for the sharing of food, with a bright and airy space, a palette of soft colours and a simple naturality.

The dining area reaches up into the eaves of the roof, with the restaurant's original timber frames on display.

"Douglas fir has an amazing grain structure that feels warm with a touch of pink glow," Anton Bak, co-founder of Vermland told CLAD. "It was the perfect match for the existing timber frame structure in the building. Since all the furniture was made out of the same material, it was important for us that the wood was light and at at the same time had a 'soft' feel."

A long central table catering for families or large groups hangs from the ceiling and helps to create different areas within the space, while smaller booths and bar seating with stools are arranged around the side of the room.

The booths are finished with backrests in checkered material and seat cushions in leather, while a tall curtain covers the entrance to the bathroom.

The restaurant's bar, hanging table, accompanying benches, booths, shelving units and other small pieces of furniture were all designed and handcrafted from the Douglas fir.

Vermland took their inspiration from the existing timber frame structure and from their own interest in Japanese joinery. The interior took about six weeks to create altogether.
