Could the RSC be on the move?
According to recent reports, the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) may finally have found a new London home.
The RSC has been in lengthy talks with the Ambassador’s Group, which owns a number of West End venues, over a possible move the Albery theatre in St Martin’s Lane.
A move to Albery would shift RSC’s London office from the Barbican in the City to the heart of West End.
A spokesperson for the RSC told Leisure Opportunities: “We still haven’t signed contracts, so nothing has yet been confirmed. However, we are looking to make an official announcement on the matter on 15 July.
“Since Michael Boyd became our artistic director, his first priority has been to ensure the company’s financial stability and organise our headquarters in Stratford.
“However, he has always maintained that a regular presence in London is essential to us. It’s just the case of sorting out the roots before branching out.”
The winter of 2003-2004 was the first that season that didn’t see a full RSC season transferred to London for 43 years.
